Blair condemns attacks
Prime Minister Tony Blair expressed shock and outrage at the terrorist attacks in the United States and called on democracies to come together to fight what he described as “the new evil” in the world.
Mr Blair sent his “deepest condolences” to President George Bush and the American people for the “most terrible and shocking event”.
“We can only imagine the terror and carnage there and the many many innocent people who will have lost their lives,” said a grim faced Mr Blair.
The Premier went on: “This mass terrorism is the new evil in our world today.
“It is perpetrated by fanatics who are utterly indifferent to the sanctity of human life.”
In a statement, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said: “The world will be watching these pictures from the US with absolute horror.
“There can be no justification for these appalling acts of terrorism. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims of these atrocities.
“We in Britain have offered whatever help we can to the American government to bring the perpetrators to justice and I have passed my condolences to the US Secretary of State Colin Powell.” (PA)
