Sci-Fi's Dune

August 17, 2003 - 4:54am

I tried to watch Sci-Fi’s Dune on DVD after having read Dune and Dune Messiah (I’m currently in Children of Dune). The following are it’s highlights:

  • They get the names right. Mostly.

The following are it’s downfalls:

  • It’s all out of order.
  • There are important events (such as Paul’s awakening) that are completely omitted or moved so far from their rightful place as to break the story.
  • The costume designer never read the book or did so on LSD. Whichever, they designed the costumes on LSD and with a penchant for old, bad sci-fi/fantasy movies (aka “B” movies, bordering on “C”).
  • The set designer never read the book (i.e. Caladan and Seitch Tabr).
  • The script writers never finished the series.
  • The actors can’t.
  • The characters portrayed are not those written (Chani is warmer; Stilgar does not trust Jessica at all; Jessica is afraid of her son; Paul is more forceful; etc.).

I had to stop before part two (of four) was done. It was so painful I just couldn’t take the desecration any longer.

It was just so bad. Ungh. I feel dirty.
