SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A federal judge has declared it unconstitutional to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools.
“The modern city is ugly not because it is a city but because it is not enough of a city, because it is a jungle, because it is confused and anarchic, and surging with selfish and materialistic energies.” — “The Way to the Stars” Lunacy and Letters – G. K. Chesterton |

Oh, I dunno. It makes some sense. If we aren’t going to be a nation “under God” then we probably should stop claiming that we are.
Of course, I don’t really like that option—but at least it’d be honest.
I wonder what it would be like if we did decide, as a nation, to be “under God?” Not that we’d have to be a theocracy, mind you, but even just content in the idea that a lot of law and morality comes out of the idea that there is a God. I don’t think that has to be antagonistic to a pluralistic society at all.

That's what the Declaration of Independence said, essentially. "Endowed by our Creator" and so on. Doesn't mention what god, but it does give a root that the current judicial system would rather not be there.
But the government would rather have spiritually-sterile citizens. Makes life easier for them, somehow.
