Sparkle

I just discovered and implemented a very spiffy new bit of code today. Sparkle is a self-update hack (in the best of terms) by for Mac OS X programs that’s simply stellar. It will check for an update, download it, install it, and restart the program if one is detected. The best part? No code. Include it in your project and hook up one menu item (instance it in your NIB) and one checkbox (bindings) in your prefs and then off it goes.

I have some changes I made to the code to make it work the way I wanted, and I’ll detail that on Mac Geekery here in a bit, but I wanted to share that the next rev of Notae will have this in it (installed, tested, and approved). Very cool stuff.

Hat tip to Sci-Fi Hi-Fi for this one.
